A thermometer takes the temperature of it’s environment. 

A thermostat takes the temperature of it’s environment and then responds by changing the temperature. 

The Steps start by teaching us how to take the temperature of our lives. We get a reading. We learn what is really going on, not what we falsely believe behind our denial walls. 

As we work the Steps, we become thermostats. We take a reading of what is going on, then we make changes for the better.  In Step 12, we find we are awakened spiritually, we then reach beyond ourselves to help others change, and then we use all the tools we have learned to mange our lives successfully.
