“What Would Jesus Do?” is a reminder of our 11th Step. Seeking only His will and the power to carry it out.
Seeking means we have to learn how to listen, to hear what He is saying to us. Many voices clamor for our attention. His is often a still, small voice that we have to practice discerning. The world, broken and sin-controlled, has a loud voice: do this, don’t do that, say this, keep quiet, avoid, do, run, hide, and then condemns us for not doing it the wrong way.
Try this: picture standing in the produce section of the grocery store with broccoli in your left hand and asparagus in your right. Ask Jesus which one does He want you to buy.
“Broccoli”, comes into your mind.
But you answer, “the asparagus is so green, and it is in season and on sale.”
“Broccoli.”
“But Lord, don’t you think that the asparagus is better?”
“Are you trying to change my mind and do it your way?”
“Oh, I’m wanting to be in control of even you Lord.”
“Yes, buy the broccoli.”
“Thank you Lord, I’ll buy the broccoli.”
Practice asking for directions, seeking His will for you in the moment. When you have a list of tasks, ask which one first. Then do what comes into your mind. Ask for directions about actions that seem to ok to do either way. It is not about the task it is about seeking and wanting His will for you. Practice listening in the moment about ordinary life stuff, then when the bigger issues come along, it will be easier and safer to act as He would. Then you are safe in His will.
