Addictions are created to manage pain from trauma. When a child is harmed with no caring adults to help, then the child has to find a way to escape the emotional pain. So the events are stored away in their growing brain. The emotional pain is buried. Over time, addictions are discovered and used to continue this process. Alcohol works, broccoli doesn’t.
While the addict is active in their addiction, they are reacting to life events that trigger the old stored trauma and the use of their addiction to avoid the current pain. Such as: boss yells at client and the old memory of an angry scary dad is triggered. To cope, the client uses their addiction.
A Timeline is a tool to help a recovering addict clear out the buried emotional pain. These memories are stored in the limbic brain and need help to identify and process.
A Trauma Egg + an Angel Egg >>> Timeline, that Dr. Patrick Carnes devised to help.
This process needs to only be done under the supervision of a professional as well has the person having a safe buddy to process all the emotions that are released.
The goal is to do the work while maintaining sobriety. To heal.
